Girls, Love, and Fashion = A Good Chicklit

Bergdorf Blondes

Reading chick literature (or chicklit) book is always good for stress-relieving. Although sometimes I wonder, if there’s chicklit, teenlit, would it be a boylit or manlit? Hmmm.

Anyway. I read some chicklit that includes fashion and so far my favorite books are Plum Sykes’ Bergdorf Blondes and of course, Lauren Weisberger’s The Devil Wears Prada). Both are stunning, lovely books to spend my evening with a cup of hot chocolate and I just coudn’t put it down until I finish it. Famous designers mentioned in those books. The main characters are usually so fashionable and reading them is like walking into a new world of Fashion TV closet.

The Devil Wears Prada

Of course, there are other chicklits that offer similar story about fashion. Like the glam Confession of a Shopaholic, for example. Or the hit Sex And The City – which turns everyone into Carrie fever. But Bergdorf Blondes and The Devil Wears Prada are never boring to me.

Now, I’m not a highly fashionable person myself. But I always love to see what’s hot and what’s not in the current lifestyle. Both books describes the high lifestyle in in big city – which I could say it’s not happening only in America, but even in this small Asian country. But the description is smooth, easy to read and understandable. Doesn’t have to be a fashion expert to dig in the main character’s passion for Gucci boots or private jet, but also doesn’t have to be a snob to like those luxurious items. These books aren’t ‘snobbish’ as some other books which sometimes are making me sick by reading the first two chapters.

Other thing that attracted me from these books is perhaps the connection with Anna Wintour. The legendary editor-in-chief of Vogue magazine was somewhat featured in these two novels. Plum Sykes, the author of Bergdorf Blondes was a fashion editor at Vogue. While in Devil Wears Prada, the character of Miranda Priestly the editor is simply inspired by Wintour. While I adore miss Wintour very much, it is not a surprise why I love those books, no? 🙂

On a related note: if you don’t know who Anna Wintour is, here’s a video about Vogue’s September Issue. FYI.
